Privacy Policy
Public Health Australia is an independent public health education project edited by Zee Jung. This policy explains what we collect through publichealthaustralia.com and our monthly email, why, and your choices. We aim to follow the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
The short version
- No cookies on this website, and no advertising or tracking pixels.
- We only collect personal information if you choose to give it to us, for example your email address when you subscribe.
- We never sell or share your information for marketing.
What we collect and why
Monthly email
If you subscribe, we collect your email address, the date and page where you subscribed, your confirmation and consent record, and basic email statistics (opens, clicks, unsubscribes). We use this only to send the newsletter, keep a record of your consent, and improve our content.
Visitor count
To show how many visits the site gets, your browser sends an anonymous "visit" signal at most once a day. It contains no personal details. To stop the count being inflated, our server briefly keeps a scrambled code in memory for up to 30 minutes. It is never saved, and we do not store IP addresses. A small note in your browser's local storage (not a cookie) remembers that today's visit was already counted.
Topic suggestions and "Was this helpful?"
If you suggest a topic, we store the text you write, the date and the page you sent it from. Please don't include names, contact details or health information. Suggestions are private: we read them to plan content and never publish them with anything that identifies you. "Was this helpful?" answers are stored only as a total count for each page.
Website analytics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies and without collecting personal data.
Job listings
Job ads on our Careers page link to other websites. When you click a link, the other website's privacy policy applies.
Embedded videos
Videos load from YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). YouTube's privacy terms apply when you play a video.
Who helps us run things
- Cloudflare (United States and global network): website hosting, security, analytics and the database for visit counts and suggestions.
- Kit (Kit, Inc., United States): stores newsletter subscribers and sends the email.
- Google: our newsletter@ inbox is forwarded to a Gmail account, so emails you send us are stored by Google.
These providers may store information outside Australia, including in the United States. We choose established providers with their own privacy and security commitments.
How long we keep it
- Subscriber details: while you're subscribed. After you unsubscribe, Kit keeps a record that you unsubscribed so you are not emailed again. Ask us if you want everything deleted.
- Topic suggestions: up to 2 years, then deleted.
- Visit and "helpful" counts: kept as totals only.
Your choices and rights
You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email. You can also ask to see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you by emailing [email protected]. We'll reply within 30 days.
If you're unhappy with how we handled your information, please tell us first so we can fix it. You can also contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
Children
Our monthly email is for people aged 16 and over.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date below. If a change affects subscribers in a significant way, we'll mention it in the monthly email.
